Medical Shadowing is a favorite extracurricular activity or premeds. It lets you know what the field of medicine is like and shows an admission committee that you have seriously explored your career options and have a realistic picture of what your career might include. So how do you find medical shadowing opportunities? The key is to not be shy.

Ask any Dr. you have contact with (your pediatrician, your grandmothers urologist, anyone really) if you can shadow them. If they don’t have time for you they might suggest someone else. They are never offended by the request. Sometimes they are delighted to have an interested young person around the office. Or call the volunteer office at your local hospital. Finally if this is too much cold calling for you, network with older premeds. Many may be finishing up a shadowing opportunity and will be willing to help you take over their slot.
